What Is an Electrofusion Welding Machine?

An electrofusion welding machine is a computer-controlled power supply unit that delivers a precisely regulated
electrical current to the resistance wire coil embedded inside an electrofusion fitting. The current heats the coil,
which melts the inner bore of the fitting and the outer surface of the HDPE pipe simultaneously. As the molten
polyethylene interfaces cool under controlled conditions, they fuse at a molecular level to produce a permanent,
leak-proof joint that achieves the full pressure rating of the pipe wall.

The machine does not generate heat itself. Its function is to deliver the correct voltage, current and fusion time to
the fitting according to the fitting manufacturer’s specification, read from the barcode on the fitting, and to
record the weld parameters for quality traceability.

Electrofusion welding machines are used in every situation where butt fusion welding is not practical, including
confined spaces, service connections, branch connections on live mains, pipeline repairs, valve station
installations and any connection point where a butt fusion machine cannot be correctly positioned or operated.

How Does an Electrofusion Welding Machine Work?

Step 1: Pipe Preparation

The pipe end is cut square and the outer surface is scraped in the zone that will sit inside the fitting socket.
Scraping removes the oxidised polyethylene layer to expose virgin material for fusion. This step is critical and is
the most common point of failure on poorly made joints.

Step 2: Cleaning

Both the scraped pipe surface and the fitting socket interior are cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and allowed to dry
completely before assembly. Any contamination at the interface prevents correct fusion.

Step 3: Assembly

The pipe is inserted into the fitting socket to the correct insertion depth, marked on the pipe before assembly.
Clamps hold the assembly in fixed alignment throughout fusion and cooling.

Step 4: Barcode Scanning

The machine operator connects the controller leads to the fitting terminals and scans the barcode or datamatrix
printed on the fitting body. The machine reads the fitting identification and automatically retrieves the correct
fusion voltage, current and fusion time for that specific fitting size, material and manufacturer.

Step 5: Fusion Cycle

The machine runs the fusion cycle automatically. The LCD display shows real-time parameters throughout the cycle. The
built-in monitoring system detects abnormal conditions, such as incorrect resistance or open circuit, and terminates
the cycle immediately if a fault is detected. Fusion indicators on the fitting body confirm the cycle has completed
correctly.

Step 6: Cooling and Record

The joint must remain clamped and undisturbed for the full cooling period. On completion, the machine stores a
complete welding record, including fitting ID, date, time, fusion voltage, current, duration and any fault codes, in
its internal memory. This record can be downloaded for project quality documentation.

higher current output capacity of 0 to 120 Amperes supports the larger resistance wire coils in big-diameter
